I’s Almonte SAL Pitcher of the Week

Kannapolis Intimidators photo
Kannapolis Intimidators photo
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Kannapolis Intimidators starting pitcher Yency Almonte has been named South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for June 29-July 5 following his near no-hitter on Independence Day.
Almonte held Augusta hitless two outs into the ninth inning on July 4 at Lake Olmstead Stadium, finishing his outing after a career-long 8 and 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and one walk while matching his career-high of six strikeouts to earn a win in the Intimidators’ 1-0 shutout of the GreenJackets.
Almonte, 21, retired 18 straight batters from the third inning into the ninth before Augusta’s Jeremy Sy broke up the gem with a two-out base hit up the middle in the home half of the final frame. The right-hander pitcher improved to 6-4 with a 4.19 ERA (32 ER/68.2 IP) in 13 games (12 starts) for Kannapolis this season.
The Miami native has also earned a win with High-A Winston-Salem in one out in the Carolina League.  The weekly plaudit is the first for Almonte this season and the third by an Intimidators pitcher in 2015.
Almonte joins former Intimidator Jordan Guerrero who twice earned SAL Pitcher of the Week honors (April 9-19 and May 11-18) before the White Sox promoted Guerrero to Winston-Salem.
Behind Almonte’s 8 and 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, Kannapolis won its league-leading 10th shutout of 2015, tied for fifth-most in all of full-season Minor League Baseball. Almonte also set a franchise record for the longest no-hit outing in Intimidators history, coming one out shy of the team’s first ever 9-inning no-hitter. Three of the four Kannapolis gems since 2001 have been 7-inning contests as part of doubleheaders, and last season Thad Lowry spun a rain-shortened 5-inning no-hitter at the West Virginia Power.
Kannapolis continues this season-long nine-game road trip with game three of four against the GreenJackets on Monday at 7:05 p.m. as RHP Spencer Adams (4-4, 3.90 ERA) takes the mound for the Intimidators against Augusta’s RHP Sam Coonrod (5-2, 2.63 ERA). The Intimidators return home on Tuesday, July 14, for a seven-game home stand against Hagerstown and Lakewood.  For ticket and promotional information, call the F&M Bank Box Office at (704) 932-3267 or visit

Bojangles’ Summer Shootout continues Tuesday

Charlotte Motor Speedway photo

On Tuesday, July 7, at Charlotte Motor Speedway, local pastors will step down from their pulpits and step on the gas as they race each other in the annual Faster Pastor school bus races at the Bojangles’ Summer Shootout Series. The holy men will strap on their helmets and zip up their fire suits as they take to the frontstretch quarter-mile at full speed in these Goliath-like machines for the Faster Pastor championship.

Pastors buckling up to compete include: Buddy Compton, of the Sons of Thunder Ministry; Scott Gentry, of Motor Racing Outreach (MRO); Donnie Icenhour, of Rocky River Church in Concord; Jeff Bates, of Elevation Church in Concord; Alex Kennedy, of Carmel Baptist Church in Matthews; Don Newman, of Memorial United Methodist Church in Charlotte; David Henderson, of Venture Church in Harrisburg and Scott Davis, of Pitts Baptist Church in Concord.

“It’s always fun to get all of the churches together and get everyone involved in the Summer Shootout.  I know a lot of people want tickets to this race, so it’s going to be a fun one,” said Compton.  “Just give me a steering wheel and I can take care of the rest.”

“I am really looking forward to regaining my title and my belt back,” said Newman, who won the event in 2014.  “More importantly though, I really enjoy the opportunity the kids at church have to get out to the speedway. That makes it all worth while.”

In addition to Tuesday night’s Faster Pastor race, Bandolero and Legend car drivers will crank up the competition as they continue to battle for the championship title of the Bojangles’ Summer Shootout Series, the most preeminent Legend Car Series in the nation.

Also the Charlotte Motor Speedway Play Zone will be open and will feature bounce houses, face painting and interactive games at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Fan Van.

Admission to the Bojangles’ Summer Shootout Series is FREE for children ages 13 and under, and adult tickets are only $8.  Fans are also encouraged to visit local Bojangles’ to receive a $2 off coupon.

Tickets are available in advance at the speedway ticket office and at Gates 4 and 5 the night of the race. Parking is free. Spectator gates open at 5 p.m. with preliminary action starting at 5:10 p.m. Opening ceremonies are scheduled at 7 p.m. and feature races are scheduled to conclude by approximately 10 p.m.

In addition to the weekly highlight shows on MAVTV, fans can watch live action through a pay-per-view via Performance Racing Network and for just $14.99 per night. For more details or to purchase a pay-per-view subscription for the Bojangles’ Summer Shootout, visit (

Charlotte 49ers battling to make C-USA tournament

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte baseball will host UTSA in the final Conference USA series of the year, wrapping up the 2015 regular season, in hopes of qualifying for the C-USA Tournament to be held at Southern Miss next week. The Niners are one of six teams still alive for the three final berths in the annual tournament.

To get in next week, the Niners will need to take at-least two from UTSA at home this weekend and have help from other teams and their series outcomes. Close to a dozen scenarios are still to be determined based on this weekend’s Thursday-Saturday series in Conference USA. Charlotte did take two-of-three from UTSA on the road in San Antonio last year.

The complete schedule, stats and series preview are on Charlotte49ers.

Davidson battles Richmond for spot in A10 tournament

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson baseball team will cap off the regular season with its final home series against the Richmond Spiders starting Thursday at 6 p.m. at Wilson Field.

The series is crucial for both teams as it determines fate in the Atlantic 10 Championship, which begins next week at George Mason starting Wednesday, May 20. The top seven A-10 teams qualify for the Championship with the No. 1 seed receiving a bye.

A10 Assists: Davidson wins community service challenge

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.— Davidson College athletics has won the second-annual Atlantic 10 Conference Assists Challenge, completing over 19,000 hours of community service during the 2014-15 academic year. In all, student-athletes and staff at the 14 A-10 member institutions completed 71,848 community service hours, three times more than last year.

An amazing number by itself, the record-breaking hours is a fitting finish in a landmark year for the Atlantic 10 SAAC, which included increased involvement in all levels of collegiate athletic administration, heavy participation in the It’s On Us Campaign and an annual video competition that saw high participation numbers.

Record attendance for Kannapolis Intimidators
The Kannapolis Intimidators set a new 3-day franchise attendance record over the weekend by welcoming 12,018 fans to CMC-NorthEast Stadium on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  The Intimidators – now playing the 21st season of baseball in Kannapolis – drew 3,976 on Friday followed by 4,038 on Saturday and 4,006 on Sunday to reach the new milestone.
The weekend featured popular promotions such as Jurassic Ballpark on Friday with Dakota and Friends, postgame fireworks on Saturday presented by Cabarrus Eye Center, and a princess party with Elsa, Anna, and Olaf on Kid’s Day Sunday presented by Cornerstone Church.  The Intimidators also welcomed thousands of students from area school districts to the ballpark to be recognized as part of the team’s second annual Reading All-Stars Celebration, which honors students from kindergarten through eighth grade for their achievements in literacy.
Both the Friday and Sunday games set franchise attendance records for the respective days of the week, excluding Independence Day fireworks shows.  Earlier this season, the Intimidators drew a season-high 4,550 to the annual Education Day presented by CMC-NorthEast on Wednesday, April 22, the largest Education Day crowd since 2011.  The Intimidators have averaged 2,858 fans in 10 openings so far this season.
The team wraps up the current home stand on Monday with Belly Buster Monday presented by Buffalo Wild Wings, featuring all-you-can-eat for only $10 (some exclusions apply) before opening a 7-game road trip to West Virginia and Lexington. The Intimidators return home for a 4-game series in Kannapolis May 14-17 against the Lakewood BlueClaws.  Tickets are available by calling the F&M Bank Box Office at (704) 932-3267.
