The Charlotte 49ers and Gene and Vickie Johnson are honoring the memory of Boyd F. Cauble with a scholarship in his memory.

Boyd F. Cauble Men’s Basketball Student-Athlete Scholarship Established by Gene & Vickie Johnson in honor of long-time supporter

Thanks to a shared love for the 49ers, generous university supporters Gene and Vickie Johnson have established The Boyd F. Cauble Men’s Basketball Student-Athlete Scholarship.  Cauble, a longtime fan and supporter of 49ers athletics, passed away in June at the age of 72.

“This is another example of Gene & Vickie’s commitment to the Charlotte 49ers athletic program and a wonderful tribute to Boyd that will have a lasting impact on our men’s basketball program,” said 49ers Athletic Director Mike Hill.

The days of the Grubstake Club

“Vickie and I have known Boyd Cauble since the days of the Grubstake Club and have never known him to have anything but a smile on his face and a warm, heartfelt greeting to everyone he came in contact with,” said Gene Johnson. “His love for Niners basketball extended over 5 decades and he was a proud and loyal Forty-Niner.”

“We were heartbroken to hear of his untimely death and have decided to establish the Boyd F. Cauble Men’s Basketball Student-Athlete Scholarship in his honor,” Johnson added. “We know there are others who would like to honor Boyd and we invite you to contribute to this endowment. It is altogether a fitting tribute to Boyd that there will always be a men’s basketball player who is the recipient of this scholarship and Boyd’s legacy will continue to shine brightly.”

“We’re so honored by Gene & Vickie’s incredibly generous gift in remembrance of my Dad. Like the Johnsons, Dad valued friendship and loyalty and was always ready to give back to UNC Charlotte. The basketball team was such a sense of pride and excitement for our family, so knowing that his legacy will continue by helping student athletes achieve success, both on and off the court, would mean the world to him,” said Boyd and Doris Cauble’s son, Bo.
